Hi, I’m Julia B. Chan and currently the editor in chief of The 19th, a nonprofit newsroom covering the many ways gender and race dynamics shape up in U.S. politics, and how policies and legislation impact actual people. We also love to interrogate power.

I’ve worked in the media and news industry for more than 20 years, managing and leading editorial teams and strategies, story production and audience engagement for breaking news and long-form investigative work. I consider myself a digitally-savvy journalist who’s worked across formats such as print and broadcast; and an enthusiastic project manager. I’ve been a reporter, producer, columnist, radio host, editor and election night pizza czar.

For a more comprehensive look at my past jobs and newsrooms, check out my LinkedIn.

I’ve always been known for my keen curiosity (read: being nosy) and meticulous research skills, and I’ve dedicated my career to uncovering the truth, context and history behind complex issues, and amplifying underrepresented voices. My care for storytelling is matched only by my commitment to journalistic integrity and accuracy. And I’ve been fortunate to have my dedication to the craft, and commitment to fostering communities around this work, earn me recognition from peers and awards.

Growing up as a wild child in San Francisco, life is a bit more chill these days. I enjoy quiet moments at the beach, loud ones with my family, good music on a decent sound system and all the noodles I can eat.

Drop me a note on any of the platforms and if you see me around, please say hi! 👋
